Will Smith’s blue Genie is back in a new “Aladdin” trailer and, whew, he looks a whole new world better this time around.
You’ll recall when the half-human/half-CGI character — basically just Smith’s dad bod painted blue — was revealed in a trailer in February, the reaction ranged from perplexed to horrified, all of it bad. But in what seems like a concerted effort to calm the fears of moviegoers, Disney only included shots of Smith’s Genie in human form or as a CGI giant instead of a creepy amalgam of the two in the new clip.
The trailer also gives us more Agrabah, hot Jafar (Marwan Kenzari), plenty of slow-motion shots, and the first glimpses of Raj the Tiger, Magic Carpet and the “A Whole New World” musical number, which sounds a lot like Lea Salonga and Brad Kane’s original version.
The live-action version of the animated Disney classic stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Jasmine. Directed by Guy Ritchie (“Sherlock Holmes”), the movie flies into theaters on a magic carpet May 24.
